Art Therapy is a mental health service that utilizes art making with models of counselling and psychotherapy that takes into account the many ways individuals learn, remember, process, and express themselves. In art therapy clients are encouraged to make art, use metaphors to externalize issues, foster self-esteem, improve self-awareness, and gain insight into the nature of their difficulties and possible solutions. Sometimes art making can be enough to gain relief from issues. Other times it is the starting point for future artwork and healing. Unlike traditional art classes, art therapy focuses on the process of making art in a non-judgmental environment.
